One of the main contributors to global warming is the world's food chain, as global food production accounts for 70% of the loss of biodiversity on land. As the human population increases, these situations will only worsen. With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the challenge of sustainably feeding everyone while achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for inclusive and efficient food systems. Let’s explore one of the GREAT efforts to address this urgent issue.
FOOD ACTION ALLIANCE
The World Economic Forum, the International Fund of Agricultural Development (IFAD), and Rabobank launched the Food Action Alliance during the Sustainable Development Impact Summit 2019. It now has over 35 partners from businesses, governments, international organizations, civil societies, and farmers' organizations. The alliance's flagship initiatives aim to make a tangible impact on food systems by advancing human and planetary health, streamlining value chains, enhancing livelihoods, and promoting country-led initiatives that strengthen local food systems.
PARTNERSHIP AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF FOOD SYSTEMS
The alliance supports several initiatives, including the Sustainable Cattle Landscapes initiative in the Colombian Amazon. This project intends to involve livestock farmers in a multi-stakeholder effort to create value chains without deforestation. The project will link sustainable production and consumption while promoting forest-friendly development by utilizing blended finance methods together with traceability technologies and monitoring tools. Another promising outcome from the Food Action Alliance and its partner Grow Asia is the Vietnam Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture (PSAV). The alliance has upskilled 2.2 million farmers and is working to provide 20 million farmers with the ability to adopt new agricultural standards and practices. Moreover, to scale up and accelerate the country's transformation into a powerhouse of green, sustainable, and low-emission agricultural products, Vietnam and its partners are now creating a food innovation hub.
Initiatives like the Food Action Alliance exemplify how collective efforts can drive meaningful change in food systems, enhancing millions' livelihoods. As food system transformation stands as one of the most impactful strategies for achieving sustainability, it is crucial to bolster and expedite these multi-stakeholder collaborations. By uniting diverse sectors—governments, businesses, and civil society—these partnerships can create innovative solutions that deliver the GREATest progress in achieving the SDGs.
